Project Overview
Background
Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) and Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) are critical subsurface technologies in the global energy transition. Both depend on wellbore integrity as injection pathways and long-term containment barriers. Cement is the primary barrier in the wellbore annulus, yet conventional oilwell cement — most commonly API Class G — is inherently brittle and can crack, debond and fail under the cyclic pressure and temperature changes typical of CCS and UHS operations.
Research Idea
This study investigates whether low-cost, waste-derived additives — crumb rubber and waste glass powder — can enhance the ductility and toughness of API Class G cement under storage-well conditions. Both are industrial by-products, but direct experimental evidence in oilwell cement for CCS/UHS conditions remains scarce, which forms the core research justification.
Proposed Methodology
API Class G cement is mixed with crumb rubber and waste glass powder at controlled dosages using a high-shear mixer; mechanical testing then evaluates the additives' effect on ductility, toughness and wellbore integrity.
